Materials Tribology / Materialien unter tribologischer Belastung




My group focuses on materials science aspects of materials under a tribological load.

Our main research topics are:

  • The elementary mechanisms for microstructural changes
  • Size effects
  • Contact mechanics
  • Reciprocating contacts and dead center effects
  • The transition from static to dynamic friction
  • Bio-inspired materials and structures

In order to be able to answer these questions:

  • We develop and build our own equipment and instrumentation, e.g. an extremely high resolution in situ reciprocating tribometer
  • Make use of ultra-high resolution electron and ion microscopy, including 3D reconstruction techniques
  • Morphologically texture surfaces by means of laser radiation
  • Employ modern x-ray techniques, including from synchrotron sources
  • Collaborate with scientists on an international basis

News from the Materials Tribology group

  • October 2015: Friederike Stolz joins the group as a PhD candidate. Welcome Friederike!
  • October 2015: Sarah and Christian both represent the group at Euromat 2015 in Warsaw
  • September 2015: Christian presents part of the group's research at Werkstoffwoche in Dresden
  • July 2015: Christian sucessfully finishes the HDZ certificate
  • June 2015: Christian now is a KIT Associate Fellow
  • May 2015: The group gives two talks at the STLE meeting in Dallas
  • March 2015: Zhilong presentes his work at the Spring Meeting of the German Physical Society
  • December 2014: Christian is selected to revieve the DGM Masing Gedächtnispreis
